Now I\u2019d like to look at a few common routines that <strong><em>cripple<\/em><\/strong> well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Relying on vitamins for nutrition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/pills-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-963\" width=\"225\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/pills-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/pills-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/pills-1024x683.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people have told me they don\u2019t worry about eating a\nbalanced diet because they take vitamins. Yes, if you have a deficiency,\nvitamins may be necessary. But it shouldn\u2019t be an excuse for constantly\nconsuming empty calories.&nbsp; According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/is-there-really-any-benefit-to-multivitamins\">Johns\nHopkins researchers<\/a>, \u201cmultivitamins don\u2019t reduce the risk for heart\ndisease, cancer, cognitive decline (such as memory loss and slowed-down\nthinking) or an early death.\u201d And as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/supplements-a-scorecard\">Harvard\nMedical School<\/a> pointed out, dietary supplements (unlike prescription\nmedications) are not regulated. As a result, \u201cmanufacturers can sell these\nproducts without submitting evidence of their purity, potency, safety, or\nefficacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Overusing antibacterial products<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au\/health\/conditionsandtreatments\/antibacterial-cleaning-products\">Better\nHealth Channel<\/a>, \u201cthe overuse of antibacterial cleaning products, including\ndisinfectants in the home, may be producing strains of bacteria that are\nresistant to multiple antibiotics.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/the-problem-with-antibacterial-soap-4125914\">VeryWell\nHealth<\/a> website adds that in 2017 the federal government banned several\nantibacterial agents from consumer soaps because the risks outweigh the benefits.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s not to say that hygiene isn\u2019t important. It is. But the\nhuman body needs bacteria, and about 98 percent of them are beneficial. Antibacterial\nitems kill good germs along with the bad. We\u2019ve learned the danger of that from\nthe excess use of antibiotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Being persistently inactive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/videogame-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-964\" width=\"225\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/videogame-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/videogame-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/videogame-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s nothing wrong with watching TV, sitting at the\ncomputer, or curling up with a good book. Unless it\u2019s done too long or too\noften. Inactivity breeds inactivity. In fact, sitting may be the new smoking.\nAs you sit for extended periods of time, your metabolism slows down and your\nresting heart rate goes up. To change this cycle, introduce physical movement.\nGet up and march during commercials. Schedule frequent breaks during web\nactivity, or stand at the computer. Do some of your reading while walking on\nthe treadmill. Take conscious steps to break your inactivity into smaller\nchunks. Regular exercise boosts metabolism over the long-term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Slouching<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Posture\u2014good or bad\u2014is always with you. I need not tell you\nthis (but I will): slouching is bad. Eventually, it becomes habitual. Even if\nyou don\u2019t turn into Igor from Young Frankenstein, <a href=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/the-many-benefits-of-proper-posture\/\">posture\naffects your health, your appearance, and your mood<\/a>. So, lift your chin,\nstraighten your shoulders and increase your well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Viewing screens right before bedtime<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I love reading on my Kindle when I am camping. It\u2019s easier\nthan using a flashlight. And chances are, it\u2019s at the end of a day I\u2019ve been\nphysically active in the great outdoors. But I\u2019ve stopped doing it regularly. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/blue-light-affects-sleep-100004835.html\">Research\nsuggests<\/a> that blue light (e.g., from cell phones, computers, and\ntelevision) at night can slow down the release of melatonin. Since melatonin is\na hormone that triggers sleep, the late-night screen time becomes an\ninterference. Technology companies are improving apps to block the blue light.\nBut a better approach is to avoid technology just before bedtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Dwelling on the negative<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s no shortage of negative news. Economic, social, and\nphysical problems exist everywhere. We can\u2019t ignore them, but we also shouldn\u2019t\ndwell on them. Though it may not be second nature, force yourself to think of\nsomething you are grateful for when you are in a pessimistic mindset.\nOtherwise, if you allow debilitating thoughts to fester, it can lead to chronic\nillnesses. Begin and end each day with positive thoughts until that activity\nbecomes habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Comparing yourself to others<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your life journey is your own. The same is true for other people.\nSo instead of comparing yourself to others, work to improve who you are today\ncompared with your prior self. Can you be kinder, stronger, more forgiving? In\nwhat ways have you grown? How can you continue to grow? Take a step back and\nlook at the big picture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Neglecting food labels<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/grocery-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-965\" width=\"113\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/grocery-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/grocery-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/grocery.jpeg 975w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 113px) 100vw, 113px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you ever feel overwhelmed by all the choices in a grocery\nstore? If so, you\u2019re not alone. And that feeling of being overwhelmed leads to\nshortcuts such as buying the lowest-priced brand, the one for which you can\napply a coupon, or the one you bought last time. But have you checked the ingredients?\nRead the food labels. The font may be small or in a color making it difficult\nto read. But do it anyway. Try to avoid processed foods with a list of\nartificial preservatives. Your body will thank you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Snacking or drinking alcohol late at night<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/eating-before-bed#section2\">Research<\/a>\non the effects of eating before bedtime is controversial. While most studies have\nshown that eating before bed correlated with weight gain. But there\u2019s more to\nthe story. The timing of the consumption is not the issue as much as the\ncontent. People are likely to eat foods with more calories while watching\ntelevision or working on the computer. Too often, the behavior becomes a habit\nand causes weight gain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having a nightcap also increases caloric consumption. But\nthere are some other factors at play here. o <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/news\/20190808\/Caffeine-before-bedtime-has-little-effect-on-sleep-quality-but-alcohol-and-nicotine-does.aspx\">Medical\nNews<\/a>, in a recent article, highlighted research \u201cconducted at Florida\nAtlantic University and Harvard Medical School, showed that drinking alcohol\nwithin four hours of going to bed was significantly more likely to interfere\nwith sleep than drinking caffeine.\u201d Having a drink may help people get to sleep\nfaster, but it interferes with<em> staying <\/em>asleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Maintaining a rut<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/traffic-jam-300x199.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-967\" width=\"225\" height=\"149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/traffic-jam-300x199.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/traffic-jam-768x511.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/traffic-jam-1024x681.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/traffic-jam.jpeg 1880w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you do the same things day-after-day out of habit? Most\nof us get into ruts slowly, like the proverbial frog in boiling water. We don\u2019t\nalways realize that it\u2019s happening. Spice things up periodically to energize\nyour well-being. Take up a new hobby. Hike in nature. Call up an old friend\nthat you\u2019ve lost touch with.&nbsp; Perhaps you\nshould even look for a new job. Don\u2019t allow stagnation to sap your health. Tania\nLuna in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/surprise\/201605\/10-signs-youre-in-rut\">Psychology\nToday<\/a>, stated that \u201cthe closest disorder to a rut in the DSM is <em>dysthymia<\/em>\u2014the\nmild,&nbsp;chronic cousin of depression.\u201d&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;In summary, to\nimprove your well-being, STOP:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Relying on vitamins for nutrition<\/li><li>Overusing antibacterial products<\/li><li>Being persistently inactive<\/li><li>Slouching<\/li><li>Viewing screens right before bedtime<\/li><li>Dwelling on the negative<\/li><li>Comparing yourself to others<\/li><li>Neglecting food labels<\/li><li>Snacking or drinking alcohol late at night<\/li><li>Maintaining a rut<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next month I\u2019ll list an additional set of habits to break.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year I had posted my personal recipe for well-being.
