I thought it was, well, weird. But as an adult, I joined her\nin this ritual. She lived to 102 and needed no prescription medications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently my brother told me he had started drinking warm\nwater (with apple cider vinegar and honey) after developing some health\nproblems. He believed it has helped him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I decided to explore the topic a bit&nbsp;more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/theculturetrip.com\/asia\/china\/articles\/why-do-chinese-people-drink-hot-water\/\">ancient Chinese medicine<\/a>, hot water is a yin beverage, trusted to restore balance in a person\u2019s health. The belief has existed for centuries, aided by periods during which the government advocated consuming boiled water. (The boiling may have been to kill bacteria, but the practice continued as a part of Chinese culture. It is not uncommon to request &#8220;<em>re shui<\/em>&#8220;\u2014or hot water\u2014in restaurants.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a similar philosophy from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ehealthyfood.com\/drink-glass-warm-water-first-thing-morning-amazing\/\">Ayurvedic\n(Hindu) tradition<\/a>. It promotes drinking a glass of warm water every morning\non an empty stomach to stimulate digestion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I\u2019ll never know the source of my mother\u2019s morning routine, it appears to be more respected than what I thought.&nbsp; Here are a few&nbsp;benefits sources cite for&nbsp;starting the day consuming plain hot water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It improves circulation and aids digestion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Warm water widens the blood vessels, increasing blood flow throughout\nthe body. Digestive organs are better lubricated to keep digestion moving. Warm\nwater can help cleanse the body and eliminate toxins. And it eases constipation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It can reduce premature aging<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since toxins in the body contribute to the appearance of\naging, you want to get rid of them. Warm water helps keep skin\ncells hydrated and supple, slowing down the aging process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It can help with weight loss<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Research has long supported the correlation between drinking water and losing weight. Drinking a<em>ny <\/em>water boosts the feeling of fullness.  But drinking <strong><em>warm<\/em><\/strong> water, in particular, elevates your body\u2019s temperature, raising your metabolic rate. That could explain why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14671205\">one study<\/a> showed that switching to hot water from cold water enhanced the potential for weight loss. (Hot water alone won\u2019t cause weight loss, but it can be part of the process.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It eases pain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Drinking warm water increases blood flow, allowing muscles\nto relax. It\u2019s known for having a calming and soothing effect on abdominal\nmuscles, providing some relief from cramps and muscle spasms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>There appears to be no real downside to drinking warm water\nin the morning (other than your own tolerance level). But it\u2019s easy enough to\ntry for a few weeks to see whether it works for you.
