{"id":749,"date":"2019-05-24T21:08:40","date_gmt":"2019-05-25T02:08:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/?p=749"},"modified":"2019-05-27T22:11:36","modified_gmt":"2019-05-28T03:11:36","slug":"join-the-jomo-movement-the-joy-of-missing-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/join-the-jomo-movement-the-joy-of-missing-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Join the JOMO Movement &#8211;  the Joy of Missing Out"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week I learned a new word, compliments of\nDictionary.com\u2019s Word of the Day: JOMO, the Joy of Missing Out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/blur-coffee-cold-209500-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-751\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/blur-coffee-cold-209500-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/blur-coffee-cold-209500-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/blur-coffee-cold-209500-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is JOMO?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The definition is \u201ca feeling of contentment with one\u2019s own pursuits and activities, without worrying over the possibility of missing out on what others may be doing.\u201d It\u2019s the opposite of FOMO, Fear of Missing Out, often linked to negative emotions. Research conducted by the University of Copenhagen discovered that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/gadgets-and-tech\/facebook-social-media-make-unhappy-jealous-people-particularly-sad-copenhagen-university-study-a7490816.html\">heavy Facebook users increased well-being<\/a> by reducing the time spent on the site. Other studies have shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/new-study-claims-facebook-instagram-and-snapchat-are-linked-to-depression-2018-11-09\">Facebook can intensify depression<\/a> among millennials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like most people, I spend a lot of time connected to digital\ndevices. And I\u2019m finding that the time spent is less&nbsp;fulfilling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now I\u2019m not saying I\u2019m ready to throw out my smartphone or\ndisconnect from the Internet. (It\u2019s clear I\u2019m using technology now to write and\ndisseminate this article.) But I am devoting more time outside, in nature. And\nI pay less attention to Facebook and other social media than in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How the JOMO Movement\nStarted<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/christinamcrook\/\">Christina Crook<\/a> wrote the book, <a href=\"ttps:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Joy-Missing-Out-Finding-Balance-ebook\/dp\/B00LDYEW06\/ref=sr_1_2?hvadid=78065379261454&amp;hvbmt=be&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvqmt=e&amp;keywords=the+joy+of+missing+out&amp;qid=1558984362&amp;s=gateway&amp;sr=8-2\">The Joy of Missing Out<\/a>, in 2015. Before that, she went on a 31-day \u201cdigital detox.\u201d She discussed it in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3g3rhVnaTy0\">TEDx talk<\/a>. And she\u2019s continued to focus on the JOMO movement, launching a website earlier this year and a podcast series starting in June 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About the same time, Crook was writing her book, technology\nentrepreneur <a href=\"https:\/\/anildash.com\/2019\/01\/20\/i-should-have-written-a-jomo-book\/\">Anil\nDash<\/a> used the term JOMO to describe his emotions&nbsp;after pulling away\nfrom technology when his son was born. (Anil Dash and Christina Crook are both\ncredited by different people for having coined the term.) Since that time, the\ntopic has surged in interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently the website PayScale argued that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.payscale.com\/career-news\/2018\/08\/why-jomo-the-joy-of-missing-out-is-the-best-thing-to-happen-to-your-career\">JOMO\ncan help save your career<\/a>. People who constantly check their phones may not\nrealize the negative effect of multitasking on errors. \u201cResearch has found that\nthe possibility of making a mistake on a task at work goes up after getting a\nphone call or text, 28 percent and 23 percent&nbsp;respectively.\u201d In addition,\npracticing JOMO improves self-care. It allows you to control the constant\nbombardment of technology on your time and mental energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Taking Your Own JOMO\nSteps<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year the New York Times published an article called, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/07\/12\/style\/joy-of-missing-out-summer.html\">How\nto Make This the Summer of Missing Out.<\/a>\u201d In it, Hayley Phelan said\nsomething that is rather profound. \u201cLike it or not, we need our technology\ndevices; we just don\u2019t need them as much as we think we do. JOMO is about\nfinding that balance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phelan pointed out that even the tech industry is embracing the concept. Google has started its <a href=\"https:\/\/wellbeing.google\/\">Digital Well-being<\/a> project. Apple has added a \u201cDo Not Disturb\u201d function to its phones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, we need to take steps to progress toward JOMO.  Phelan offered these five recommendations for controlling your tech addiction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/chains_of_a_phone_addict_1600_clr_21404-1-197x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-753\" width=\"148\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/chains_of_a_phone_addict_1600_clr_21404-1-197x300.png 197w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/chains_of_a_phone_addict_1600_clr_21404-1-768x1170.png 768w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/chains_of_a_phone_addict_1600_clr_21404-1-672x1024.png 672w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/chains_of_a_phone_addict_1600_clr_21404-1.png 1050w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 148px) 100vw, 148px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Be prepared to acknowledge you have a problem.                                 The tech industry has consciously designed products to be addictive, and we need to be aware of that. <\/li><li>Manage your digital diet as much as you do the food you eat.                                                                            Just as you are mindful of planning a well-balanced menu for your body, work to cultivate a well-balanced digital plan for your brain.&nbsp; <\/li><li>Help people set realistic expectations for what they should expect from you.                                                                                                      Don\u2019t feel compelled to respond at once to all email and all texts all the time. <\/li><li>Be intentional in your technology usage.                                                       If you don\u2019t pay attention, the minutes you spend mindlessly surfing turn into hours and days. <\/li><li>Think about technology accountability.                                                 Strive to use technology&#8211;rather than have it use you.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Final thoughts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I mentioned earlier it\u2019s ironic that my blog post on JOMO\nuses the very&nbsp;technology I caution against. But I spent much of this week\noutside landscaping my yard. And when I finish this article, I will give myself\na recess by reading a book (with actual paper!) that isn\u2019t work-related.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main point is maintaining balance. Use technology\nmindfully; never let it become your master.
