{"id":523,"date":"2019-04-19T17:04:09","date_gmt":"2019-04-19T22:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/?p=523"},"modified":"2019-05-05T21:18:31","modified_gmt":"2019-05-06T02:18:31","slug":"well-being-template","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/well-being-template\/","title":{"rendered":"Well-being is a Way of Life"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>According to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/25\/us\/americans-stressful.html?login=email&amp;auth=login-email\">Gallup\npoll<\/a>, Americans are among the most stressed people in the world. That&#8217;s why\nwe need to turn well-being into a way of life. It&#8217;s a puzzle with physical, mental,\nand emotional-spiritual components. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone has a different well-being puzzle. And it may need\nto change over time. What works when you are twenty-something may be different\nfrom when you are eighty-something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am a \u201cplenty-something\u201d woman\u2014old enough to know I\u2019m not\nas smart as I used to think I was, but young enough to do something about it. I\nwas late figuring this out. But now I am infusing well-being into the core of\nmy life. Here\u2019s how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Integrated exercise framework<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My exercise framework is a mix of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/fitness\/in-depth\/aerobic-exercise\/art-20045541\">cardio<\/a>, strength, and flexibility each week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I\u2019m at the gym, I prefer taking classes rather than working on equipment. The time is set, a room full of people provides energy, the trainers encourage effort, and the music spurs movement. My preferred cardio is a mixed-martial-arts class called Body Combat. It\u2019s my weekly high-intensity heart pumper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To build <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/fitness\/in-depth\/strength-training\/art-20046670\">muscle\nand bone strength<\/a>, I take a weight-lifting class. Again, it\u2019s a set time\nwith people and music surrounding me. Using barbells with different weights, I\ncan focus on each of the muscle groups\u2014lighter for triceps and biceps, heavier\nfor squats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/yoga-back-view-balancing-casual-373946-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Yoga \" class=\"wp-image-709\" width=\"225\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/yoga-back-view-balancing-casual-373946-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/yoga-back-view-balancing-casual-373946-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/yoga-back-view-balancing-casual-373946-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Yoga provides the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yoga15.com\/blog\/yoga-for-flexibility\">flexibility training<\/a>.\nFor most of my life, I thought yoga was not demanding enough, and more \u201cout there\u201d\nthan would fit me. I was wrong. In the few years since I started yoga, my\nbalance, my mental outlook, and my flexibility have all improved. Connecting\nmovement with breathing has also helped my focus and energy. I am a convert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I don\u2019t go to the gym, I replace classes with other\nexercises\u2014hiking, walking, biking, landscaping, lawn mowing, snow shoveling. My\nFit Bit keeps pushing me out of my normally sedentary job. While there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/good-sweat\/how-many-steps-should-i-take-a-day\/\">no\nmagic number of steps<\/a>, I\u2019ve set a personal goal and I stick to it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a challenge to fit exercise into an already busy\nschedule. But it can be built into daily routines. Take the steps instead of\nthe elevator (at least for a few floors). Park farther away in the lot. Keep\nhand weights by your desks. Do impromptu wall pushups when you take a break.\nTake opportunities to stretch whenever you can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exercise is my own secret weapon. It helps with stress,\nsleep, weight management, and health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nonstop learning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/black-and-white-blank-data-256472-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Lifelong learning \" class=\"wp-image-710\" width=\"225\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/black-and-white-blank-data-256472-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/black-and-white-blank-data-256472-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/black-and-white-blank-data-256472-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Expanding knowledge should be everyone\u2019s goal. We are never\ndone learning. But with all the technology around us, it becomes too easy to\nlapse into the passivity of pleasure-seeking experiences. With some effort, I\ntry to use technology to engage my brain in a more educational direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many benefits to maintaining an active brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.selfgrowth.com\/articles\/Top_10_Benefits_of_Lifelong_Learning.html\">Research <\/a> has shown that a challenged, stimulated brain may lead to more vibrancy later in life.<\/li><li>Continued learning helps a person adapt to change.<\/li><li>Upgrading  your knowledge helps with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Mindshift-Obstacles-Learning-Discover-Potential\/dp\/1101982853\/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=&amp;sr=\">career advancement<\/a> or transitions.<\/li><li>Lifelong learning has been linked with<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2017\/02\/lifelong-learning-is-good-for-your-health-your-wallet-and-your-social-life\"> health<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/etoninstitute.com\/blog\/link-life-long-learning-wellbeing\">well-being<\/a>.<\/li><li>You\u2019ll be more interesting and charismatic.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about ways you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/how-and-why-to-become-a-lifelong-learner\/\">can\nactivate your brain.<\/a> Acquire a new skill (how to play guitar, perhaps).\nTake an online course (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/\">Coursera<\/a> might\nbe a start). Tinker. Travel. Just don\u2019t stop learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>&#8220;A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.\u201d\u00a0 &#8211; <\/em>Robert Heinlein<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Authentic food<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I admit I don\u2019t follow any particular diet. Nevertheless,\nI\u2019m conscious of what I consume. I just plain <em>feel better<\/em> when I eat\nright. Fruits and vegetables are important staples\u2014especially if they are\norganic or natural. But I don\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/peanut-butter-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"Authentic food \" class=\"wp-image-528\" width=\"173\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/peanut-butter-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/peanut-butter.jpg 474w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 173px) 100vw, 173px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I do my best to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikihow.com\/Eat-Foods-Without-Preservatives\">minimize\nprocessed foods<\/a> and chemical preservatives. I look for labels with very few\ningredients. In particular, I avoid: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>artificial sweeteners<\/li><li>high-fructose corn syrup<\/li><li>monosodium glutamate (MSG)<\/li><li>sodium benzoate<\/li><li>sodium nitrite\/nitrate<\/li><li>sulfites<\/li><li>trans fat<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I also limit the amount of sugar, gluten, red meat, and\ndairy products (and wine and beer!) in my diet. Moderation is my forever motto.\nYes, I realize <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/warren-buffett-apos-diet-still-133602964.html\">Warren\nBuffet<\/a> and others thrive on Coke and fast food, but that doesn\u2019t work for\nme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lead a purposeful life<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone needs a purpose in life\u2014the reason you get up in\nthe morning. Living your life on purpose is a strong component of well-being. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it doesn\u2019t have to be big and impressive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/grandmother_girl_hug_1600_clr_20669-113x300.png\" alt=\"Purposeful life \" class=\"wp-image-711\" width=\"85\" height=\"225\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The lives of my family and extended family are integral to\nmuch of what I do. In fact, I changed my career to help my mother through her\ndementia during the last four years of her life. I have volunteered for several\nnon-profits. And I am one of the 40% or so of the American population who\nattend church. My life purpose continues to evolve, but it always <a href=\"https:\/\/www.takingcharge.csh.umn.edu\/life-purpose\">involves human\nconnections<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes I think about what my legacy will be. I\u2019ll never\nknow, but I am creating it by living my life on purpose. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cThe two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 Mark Twain<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/everyday-mindfulness\/\">Everyday\nmindfulness<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yoga and meditation have been key elements in my search for\nmind-body connections. Being mindful has been a gradual learning process. But with\nsome practice, it\u2019s now possible for me to take the present awareness and\nbreathing techniques into my everyday life. I believe you can, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless <a href=\"https:\/\/positivepsychologyprogram.com\/stress-management-techniques-tips-burn-out\/\">stress\nis managed<\/a>, it accumulates over time and turns into burnout. By tuning into\nthe present moments through mindfulness, you can begin to recognize your stress\nsignals and triggers, and learn to proactively moderate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When faced with a stressful situation, <a href=\"https:\/\/psychcentral.com\/lib\/learning-deep-breathing\/\">inhale deeply<\/a>\nthrough your nose and exhale through your mouth. As you exhale, focus on a word\nor phrase that will shift your mind from the negative to a positive. Words such\nas calm, relax, or peace can work. If possible, close your eyes and imagine\nyourself in a peaceful setting. Give yourself time before responding to the\nstressful incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Photo-by-Noelle-Otto-from-Pexels-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Noelle Otto from Pexels\" class=\"wp-image-712\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Photo-by-Noelle-Otto-from-Pexels-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Photo-by-Noelle-Otto-from-Pexels-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Photo-by-Noelle-Otto-from-Pexels-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rest and Relaxation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This has occasionally been a bit of a challenge for me. I am\na Type-A personality. My husband complains that I never stop moving\u2014I even\n\u201ctwitch\u201d in my sleep. I sometimes have to \u201cwork\u201d at not working. And because of\nthat, I always find myself multitasking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/figure_in_hammock_1600_clr_12789-300x192.png\" alt=\"Relaxation for well-being\" class=\"wp-image-713\" width=\"225\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/figure_in_hammock_1600_clr_12789-300x192.png 300w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/figure_in_hammock_1600_clr_12789-768x492.png 768w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/figure_in_hammock_1600_clr_12789-1024x655.png 1024w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/figure_in_hammock_1600_clr_12789.png 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But my logical brain knows how important it is to unplug. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Socializing with friends is a must. It generates laughter\nand a feeling of belonging. Research demonstrates a link between social\nconnections and health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camping and hiking trips are both back-to-nature and\nphysical-activity escapes. In the past I focused mostly on the Type-A physical\nfitness aspect. But now I approach these activities more mindfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Balance Your Priorities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As I was writing this, I realized I sometimes struggle in\nall these areas. I can&#8217;t do everything all the time. I&#8217;ve learned to set limits\nfor myself. (Or at least I&#8217;m working in that direction.) Sometimes I need to\ndeclutter my life. That includes reducing &#8220;stuff,&#8221; but also what I\nput on my calendar. I have to say &#8220;no&#8221; occasionally to be able to say\n&#8220;yes&#8221; to my health and well-being. What I don&#8217;t do can be as\nimportant was what I DO do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Final thoughts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My mother lived to 102, after surviving three types of\ncancer. She took no prescription medications and lived quite independently\nbefore succumbing to dementia. She might be from a good gene pool, but I also\nbelieve the <em>way<\/em> she lived contributed to her longevity. From her I\nlearned the importance of several well-being techniques, which I augmented with\nnew data over time.&nbsp; The result is the list of topics in this post:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cardio, strength, and flexibility exercise each week<\/li><li>Healthy foods with minimal processing and chemical preservatives<\/li><li>The pursuit of lifelong learning<\/li><li>Living my life on purpose through social and spiritual connections<\/li><li>Being mindful of the present to avoid stressful overload<\/li><li>Allowing time for sleep and relaxation<\/li><li>Setting and resetting priorities to ensure an ongoing balance of well-being<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve had\u2014and will continue to have\u2014rough patches in life.\nBut I\u2019ve learned there are no silver bullets, no shortcuts. Well-being includes\nphysical, mental, emotional and spiritual components. It\u2019s an attitude.
