Yet people are expected to do it all the time. Deadlines force it. That\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to find ways to kick-start creativity on demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"has-text-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">&#8220;<em>Deadlines move creativity from ideas to action.&#8221;            <\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"has-text-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Linda Gorchels <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Templates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, there are templates (of sorts) for creativity. Writers\nuse them all the time. Larry Brooks, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Story-Engineering-Larry-Brooks-ebook\/dp\/B004J35J8W\/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=story+engineering&amp;qid=1556228338&amp;s=gateway&amp;sr=8-1\">Story\nEngineering<\/a>, for example, describes a template with four contextual parts\nof a novel. Part 1 is the setup, Part 2 covers the hero being confronted with a\nproblem, Part 3 is the hero\u2019s attack on the problem, and Part 4 is the\nresolution. Starting with a framework gives creativity a boost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mystery writers apply similar templates for setting up the\ncrime, the investigations, the clues and red herrings, and the final\nresolution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Series writers of books, television shows and movies build\nfrom a template of characters and plot lines. NCIS, CSI, Bull and similar\nnetwork shows follow a similar plot in each episode. New versions of old shows\n(Hawaii 5-0, Magnum PI, MacGyver) use the old shows as templates for the new\nones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In each of these situations, the template provides a\nskeleton upon which to build. It reduces the barrenness of a blank screen. It\ncompresses the creative process to be able to meet stringent deadlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/river_tree_2010_4812-150x150.png\" alt=\"Nature is a template for creativity\" class=\"wp-image-521\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Templates refer to anything that can be used as a model to copy. Nature. Old products. Historical events. Biology. They don\u2019t provide the fully-finished idea. Yet, they help kick-start creativity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">&#8220;<em>The world is but a canvas to our imagination.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:left\" class=\"has-text-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">                    Henry David Thoreau <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Component Reconfiguration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Component reconfiguration refers to an examination of\nproducts and services at their elemental level. Since the components have\nalready been designed and tested, their modified usage can shorten time from\nidea to launch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drew Boyd and Jacob Goldenberg, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Inside-Box-Creativity-Breakthrough-Results-ebook\/dp\/B009K54CGE\/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=inside+the+box&amp;qid=1556228867&amp;s=gateway&amp;sr=8-1\">Inside the Box: A Proven System of Creativity\nfor Breakthrough Results<\/a>, describe\nthis approach. After deconstructing a product or service into its component\nparts, they recommend applying one or several of the following processes (or\ntemplates).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Subtraction\u2014re-imagine the product (or service or process) after removing some essential component. MP3 players were created by eliminating speakers (and replacing them with headphones)<\/li><li>Division\u2014rearrange and\/or reduce the physical or functional components into a new product. Food processors have reduced package sizes to create single servings. <\/li><li>Multiplication\u2014copy an existing element and change it in some way before adding it back to the product. Cameras have gone from a single flash to a dual flash to prevent red eye.<\/li><li>Task unification\u2014discover an additional benefit for a part or ingredient. New uses have been found for sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), which has been around since the 1800s. It became recognized as an eco-friendly alternative to chemical cleaners when Arm &amp; Hammer sponsored <a href=\"https:\/\/brightnest.com\/posts\/a-brief-history-of-baking-soda\/\">the first Earth Day<\/a> in 1970. It\u2019s now an ingredient in toothpaste, laundry detergent, cat litter, fire extinguishers, and other products. <\/li><li>Attribute dependency\u2014identify components that can change in response to differences in the environment. Smart-phone advertising can change depending on the user\u2019s tagged location.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After envisioning new products from each of these\ntechniques, the next critical step is to evaluate them. What benefit(s) will\nthe redesigned item offer? Who will want them? Are they viable? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"has-text-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><em>&#8220;Creativity is just connecting things.&#8221;\\<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"has-text-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><em>Steve Jobs <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Platforms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Product-Strategy-Roadmaps-Management-ShortRead-ebook\/dp\/B01MUGA6LG\/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=gorchels&amp;qid=1556281573&amp;s=gateway&amp;sr=8-3\">Platforms<\/a>\noffer a form of template. They define a common architecture, collection of\nassets, component designs, subsystems, or other elements shared by several\nproducts. The structures of the platforms are intended to be flexible enough\nfor variations using a common foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial design is expensive and time-consuming. However, once developed, a platform can kick-start creativity for future products. The risk is that it can result in gratuitous feature creep. The question to ask\u2014whether the platform is a chassis, a sub-assembly, or a TV series\u2014is whether there is a market for the expanded product. After all, the platform was built in the past, but creativity is about the future. Ask questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"has-text-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><em>&#8220;Because we are bound by what we know, it is difficult to imagine what we don\u2019t know.&#8221;  <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"has-text-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Walter Wriston, former Citicorp CEO  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creativity doesn\u2019t occur spontaneously on demand.&nbsp; But templates, component reconfiguration, and platforms can help kick-start the process.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s hard to be creative on demand.
