There was no noise other than the sound of my steps and the gurgle of a creek. I was alone, but yet I wasn\u2019t. Stopping, I did a 360\u00b0 turn, scanning all directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who\u2014or what\u2014was watching me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crack of a twig drew my eyes upward and I saw a large white\nowl. Its head swiveled slowly as I walked. I had found my watcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eerie though it might have been, it was also an epiphany of sorts. I had been paying attention to the present moment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size has-blue-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I had been mindful.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that wasn\u2019t always the case. I used to pride myself on my ability to multitask. I was always in a hurry, my mind filled with thoughts about the past and future. But rarely the present. Not only did I miss out on things, I was always tense and stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My first step to corral my thoughts was to take an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Dictionary#dobs=improv\">improv<\/a> class. With plots, characters, and scenes made up on the moment, I was forced to be present in the now.&nbsp; But it wasn\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later I took a photography class from a colleague, Chuck. While on an outing to the arboretum where the students were encouraged to take pictures, I continued my rushing around. Chuck put his hands on my shoulders and told me to slow down&#8211;to pay attention to the big and small things that were right in front of me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was my first glancing connection with everyday mindfulness. I decided to learn more about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is mindfulness?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the simplest terms, mindfulness is paying attention to\nthe present moment on purpose and without judgment. That includes being aware\nof your thoughts, emotions, and sensations. By being aware without judgment, it\ngives you time to avoid jerk reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lifehacker provided the following as one of <a href=\"https:\/\/positivepsychologyprogram.com\/what-is-mindfulness-definition\/\">20\ndefinitions posted on the Positive Psychology Program<\/a> website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cMindfulness has many synonyms. You could call it awareness, attention, focus, presence, or vigilance. The opposite, then, is not just mindlessness, but also distractedness, inattention, and lack of engagement.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daniel J. Siegel, clinical\nprofessor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and Executive Director\nof the Mindsight Institute, was quoted with this definition on the same\nwebsite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cMindfulness in its most general sense is about waking up from a life on automatic, and being sensitive to novelty in our everyday experiences. With mindful awareness the flow of energy and information that is our mind enters our conscious attention and we can both appreciate its contents and come to regulate its flow in a new way.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I really like his last phrase. <strong><em>We can appreciate and regulate the flow of information in our mind in a more conscious way<\/em><\/strong>. It can be hard, but awareness is the first step toward everyday mindfulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the benefits of mindfulness?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DSCN0113-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Back to nature\" class=\"wp-image-497\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DSCN0113-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DSCN0113-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DSCN0113-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lindagorchels.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DSCN0113-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Science has discovered several physical benefits of\nmindfulness. <a href=\"https:\/\/positivepsychologyprogram.com\/benefits-of-mindfulness\/#brain-mindfulness\">Five\nof the most commonly cited<\/a> are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Decreased stress\u2014lower anxiety levels and a\nfeeling of calm<\/li><li>Greater ability to deal with illness\u2014both worry\nand symptoms can be reduced<\/li><li>More control over illness recovery\u2014due to increased\nself-kindness and decreased rumination<\/li><li>Decreased depressive symptoms\u2014enhances ability\nto regulate emotions<\/li><li>Improved general health\u2014helps improve behaviors\nrelated to physical well-being<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of articles describing the impact mindfulness has\non the brain has been increasing. According to a 2015 HBR article:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Recent research provides strong evidence that practicing non-judgmental, present-moment awareness (a.k.a. mindfulness) changes the brain, and it does so in ways that anyone working in today\u2019s complex business environment, and certainly every leader, should know about.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To test your awareness of the various health benefits and\nclaims, take this 10-question <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/balance\/rm-quiz-mindfulness\">mindfulness quiz on\nWebMD<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is everyday mindfulness practiced?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The basis of most mindfulness practices is the focus on breathing.\nConcentrating on inhaling and exhaling slowly\u2014paying attention to the movement\nof air through your body\u2014focuses the mind on the present. It can be practiced\nat any and all times throughout the day. Sometimes it is spontaneous, and at\nother times it is combined with meditation or yoga, both of which tune into\nbreathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mindfulness is becoming mainstream, even being used in\nsituations you wouldn\u2019t expect. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/05\/health\/military-mindfulness-training.html\">New\nYork Times<\/a> explained its role in the military. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Mindfulness \u2014 the practice of using breathing techniques, similar to those in meditation, to gain focus and reduce distraction \u2014 is inching into the military in the United States and those of a handful of other nations\u2026.the troops who went through a monthlong training regimen that included daily practice in mindful breathing and focus techniques were better able to discern key information under chaotic circumstances and experienced increases in working memory function. The soldiers also reported making fewer cognitive errors than service members who did not use mindfulness.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The neuroscience of mindfulness involves, in part, strengthening a part of mental capacity known as \u201cworking memory\u201d \u2014 a short-term, moment-to-moment catalog of tasks understood by scientists to effectively hold only a few pieces of information at one time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>As working memory clouds through overload, decisions become jumbled and reactions more impulsive. Breathing-induced focus lets people home in on the task at hand. But it does take practice.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Still not convinced?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyday mindfulness is not voodoo. It\u2019s not new age mumbo jumbo. It has value for the average person, the average manager, the average employee. And Psychology Today has shared the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/urban-mindfulness\/201003\/top-10-reasons-why-mindfulness-is-cool\">Top 10 Reasons Why Mindfulness is Cool<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">10.&nbsp; It&#8217;s free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">&nbsp;9.&nbsp; It helps us\naccept things that we cannot change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">&nbsp;8.&nbsp; It&#8217;s\naccessible to all of us, regardless of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/basics\/spirituality\">spiritual<\/a> beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">&nbsp;7.&nbsp; It&#8217;s\nsupported by research as being helpful (but it&#8217;s not a panacea). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">&nbsp;6.&nbsp; It can be\ndone without any extraordinary effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">&nbsp;5.&nbsp; It\nencourages us to trust in our own experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">&nbsp;4.&nbsp; It helps us\nget over our selves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">&nbsp;3.&nbsp; It allows us\ngreater flexibility in living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">&nbsp;2.&nbsp; It can be\ndone anytime, anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">&nbsp;1.&nbsp; It feels\nnice(r).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you&#8217;re done reading this, pay attention to your present moments.
