They&#8217;re all about what worked in the <em>past<\/em>. In a specific context. Some have anchors, and others have wings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note the words I used in the title. Defy best practices. I\ndidn\u2019t suggest <em>ignoring<\/em> best practices, but <em>defying<\/em> them.\nExceptional product managers <em>understand<\/em> best practices and&nbsp;learn\nfrom them. But they don\u2019t fall prey to them. They aren\u2019t afraid to challenge\nand change those that are obsolete or only habits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about the <em>best practices<\/em> you\u2019ve seen in your\ncareer. Stage-gate product development. Agile. Globalization. Nationalism.\nEconomies of scale. Spin-off start-ups. Design thinking. Re-engineering. Net\nPromoter Score. Six Sigma. Lean. And dozens more. Did they all work well for\nyou? Chances are, it was a crapshoot. (Pardon my informality.) &nbsp;But you <em>can\n<\/em>get better at it with some effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Start with awareness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you <em>aware <\/em>of what diverse product management\nprofessionals consider <em>best practices<\/em> or <em>best-in-class<\/em>? Awareness\nis step one. Reading broadly, attending conferences and education events, and\ninteractions with co-workers provide this knowledge. There are both universal\nand specialized principles to consider. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The universal maxims I\u2019ve gained over the past quarter\ncentury are general. Here is a condensed list of best practices for the <em>discipline<\/em>\nof product management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Interact with\ncustomers, face-to-face whenever possible<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Balance innovation\nwith operational efficiency<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Gain business and\nfinancial skills<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Plan for the future\n(long-term) and the present<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Build rapport with all\nfunctions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Keep the data flowing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also some best practices related to the <em>governance\n<\/em>of products. These are less general, more likely to require serious\nadaptation to get their full value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Use product\ninformation management software<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Design and manage\nproducts as portfolios<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Build life-cycle\nattention into the initial concepts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Apply benchmarks and\nKPI tools<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, awareness is just the starting point. Deconstruction\nand reconstruction&nbsp;follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deconstruct the best practices<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I can\u2019t tell you the number of companies that have told me\nthey were planning to institute a new strategy or tactic because the\ncompetition was (or wasn\u2019t) doing it. Or because it\u2019s in the news. Or because\nsales were down and <em>something<\/em> had to be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s like a tailor sewing a garment taking no\nmeasurements. Do some analysis first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Consider the Context<\/strong>. Did an approach work better in\none industry than others? Were there different financial components? Was the\ntarget market and need set dissimilar? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Observe the connections<\/strong>: Was product success or\nfailure connected to the <em>best-practice<\/em> model applied? Or was there a\nregulatory catalyst, macroeconomic phenomenon, or other explanation for the\nresults? Was the short-term progress followed by long-term success? Are there\nany unintended consequences? For example, Six Sigma was almost a religion at GE\n(and other places) in the 1990s. But it has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/thomas-koulopoulos\/one-of-most-important-lessons-on-innovation-for-every-ceo.html\">fallen\nout of favor<\/a> in companies that assessed it had a negative effect on\ninnovation. It is being replaced by a greater emphasis on failing fast and\ndisrupting business models. (More best-practices?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After deconstructing the best practices, reconstruct them\nfor your purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Take the next step<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflect on the objectives you are trying to achieve. Be\nclear. Do you want to speed up product development? Improve innovation? Respond\nbetter to RFPs? Once you\u2019ve clarified goals, try to determine whether there are\nbetter practices for you to implement. It\u2019s a puzzle, but at least you\u2019ve\ndecided on the picture of the completed puzzle. Try it with a specific product or market before launching it more\nbroadly. The challenge is to have a good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/control-and-experimental-group-differences-606113\">experimental\ndesign<\/a>. Control for as many variables as you can. Determine whether the\nsoftware, or the policies, or the theories are likely to work for<em> you<\/em>,\nin your unique situation. And if they don\u2019t, try the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Don\u2019t change for sake of change if you can\u2019t envision a better outcome.
