But chances are, your clutter isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s time to declutter before\nstarting another year (and another decade). &nbsp;Studies show that being\norganized reduces stress and increases efficiency. The co-author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Emotional-Intelligence-2-0-Travis-Bradberry\/dp\/0974320625\/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3V9WN8D0TWEGC&amp;keywords=emotional+intelligence+2.0&amp;qid=1577659759&amp;sprefix=emotional+inte%2Caps%2C216&amp;sr=8-3\">Emotional Intelligence 2.0<\/a> cites the following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/11-things-organized-productive-people-do-every-day-bradberry-1f\">facts about productivity<\/a>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>The average office employee spends over one hour each day just looking for things.<\/em><\/li><li><em>The average U.S. executive spends six weeks per year searching through messy desks and disorganized files for misplaced information.<\/em><\/li><li><em>23% of adults say they\u2019re late paying their bills because they lose them<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In these cases, clutter is the enemy\nof productivity. Being efficient starts with decluttering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where to start? Pick an area of your\nchoice and dive in. Decluttering the area will help you\nfocus on your goals. Clutter distracts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever my job required my office\nto shift to a new building or location, I filled dumpsters with unnecessary\nstuff to simplify the move. While I had occasional remorse if I looked for\nsomething I had eliminated, it was far more common I found what I needed faster.\nI realized we don\u2019t need to relocate to declutter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start by removing everything\npossible from your work area. If you have a desk, move it. The effort enables\nyou to do a deep-clean. Vacuum. Dust. Disinfect, if appropriate. Create some\nopen space and leave it that way. THEN\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be conscious about what you put\nback. Keep items you use daily within arm\u2019s reach. Do you REALLY need to use\nthem every day? Purge documents and folders (both physical and electronic) and\nother items that are no longer necessary. Organize other things out of sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t allow your desk drawer to\nbecome a catch-all. Make a habit of removing junk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trim down your virtual desktop. Look\nfor opportunities to move to paperless systems to reduce clutter and increase\nsearchability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commit to regular decluttering. You\nwill be less stressed and more productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Declutter Your Home<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people are now familiar with\nMarie Kondo\u2019s book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Life-Changing-Magic-Tidying-Decluttering-Organizing\/dp\/1607747308\/ref=sr_1_1?qid=1577662124&amp;refinements=p_27%3AMarie+Kond%C5%8D&amp;s=books&amp;sr=1-1&amp;text=Marie+Kond%C5%8D\">The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,<\/a><\/em> or her\nNetflix show, <em>Tidying Up With Marie Kondo.<\/em> Both encourage people to take\na holistic approach to reducing excess material trappings by determining which\nones you value and appreciate. It moves you away from basic <em>organization<\/em>\ntoward <em>minimalism<\/em>. I chuckled when I read one Amazon reviewer\u2019s comment:\n\u201c<em>I always thought I was a very organized person (because everything I owned\nhad a designated, labelled place and my house was always super clean), but\nafter reading this book I realized I was nothing more than a skilled hoarder.\u201d<\/em>\nI suspect many of us are skilled (or unskilled) hoarders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kondo\u2019s recommendation is to\ndeclutter by category, and do it in a marathon session, acknowledging it could\ntake weeks (or months). Other experts, like \u201c<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Minimalist-Home-Room-Room-Decluttered\/dp\/1601427999\/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Joshua+Becker&amp;qid=1577714248&amp;sr=8-1\">The Minimalist Home<\/a><\/em>\u201d author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.becomingminimalist.com\/creative-ways-to-declutter\/\">Joshua Becker<\/a>, focus on the benefits of owning\nfewer things. There is less to organize and less to clean. Even the garage, attic, and basement.\nClothes, momentos, pictures, medicines, electronics, food, cleaning supplies,\ntools, appliances\u2014in short, all things\u2014are fair game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might start with five minutes or\nan entire weekend. Maybe you fill one trash bag, or commit to eliminating one\nitem per day every day. Decide what will motivate you to pursue the process to\nthe end. Remain firm. If you have occasional indecision about an item, set it\naside and keep going. Just don\u2019t allow your pile of undecided items to grow too\nlarge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In all honesty, I can\u2019t think of an <em>easy<\/em>\nway to declutter years of accumulations. It requires some personal tenacity.\nBut the final results are worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<strong>Declutter Your Mind and\nYour Life<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps even worse than a cluttered\nhome is a cluttered mind. Disorganized. Unfocused. Restless. Foggy. We have trouble\nsleeping because thoughts nag at us. It happened to me last night. My brain\nharassed me about an unfinished project. I eventually convinced myself &nbsp;I could be more efficient after a good night\u2019s\nsleep, but that required mental discipline. I put my brain into meditation\nmode, forcing most of the negative thoughts away.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve already decluttered your\nhome and work space, you have already reduced some pressure on mental clutter.\nBut you\u2019re not done. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cyberspace has elevated the mental\nclutter we all experience. Social media, email, texts, and incessant apps suck\nthe energy out of our mental flows. Think about it. How much time do you spend\ntech-free? Extricate yourself from negative social media. Tune in to only those\nthat contribute to the quality of your life or knowledge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prioritize your relationships. Which\nones enhance your life? Which ones are toxic? Be objective and honest. Strong,\npositive relationships calm your mind, while others introduce clutter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collect all your thoughts and decide\nwhat to trash and what to keep. Throw away emotions and thoughts that no longer\nserve you. Savor the ones that do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em>Declutter regularly. Set yourself free from physical and emotional baggage that is weighing you down.
